The Price Is Bodega: an NYC price-guessing game

Every New Yorker carries a price list in their head: the chopped cheese, the bacon egg and cheese, the quarter water, and the one constant in a changing city, the 99 cent Arizona. This free browser game puts that knowledge on the register. Guess what each item runs on your block, then do it all again in SoHo, where the same snacks cost way more than they should. Perfect solo or as a pass-and-play party game.

How to play

  1. Tap "Ring me up" to start. An item lands on the counter.
  2. Slide to your price guess, or nudge it with the Lower and Higher buttons.
  3. Hit "Lock it in" to ring it up. Closer guesses earn more points, and a spot-on guess pays out big.
  4. Ring up all 8 items, then take on round two: the same bodega at SoHo prices.
  5. Read your register tape at the end. And whatever you do, the Arizona is 99 cents.

FAQ

How do you play The Price Is Bodega?

A bodega item lands on the counter and you guess its price with a slider, then lock it in. The closer your guess, the more points you score. You ring up 8 items in round one, then play a second round at SoHo prices where everything costs more.

What is the Arizona rule?

The Arizona iced tea is 99 cents. It says it on the can. Guess anything else and you score zero on that item, plus the register tells you off. Respect the can for full points.

Is The Price Is Bodega free to play?

Yes. It is a free browser game from The NYC Plug, no download and no signup. Your best score saves on your device so you can chase a new personal best.

What changes in the SoHo round?

Round two is the same bodega, now in SoHo. Prices inflate, so you have to recalibrate every guess. The results tape even shows how far under (or over) the SoHo reality your guesses ran.

Does this game test sobriety or impairment?

No. The Price Is Bodega is for entertainment only. It is not a sobriety, impairment, or fitness-to-drive test, and it is intended for adults 21 and over. Never drive impaired.
