Hail a Cab: a free NYC taxi reflex game

Hail a Cab is a free browser game about the most quietly competitive sport in New York: getting a taxi before somebody else does. Cabs stream past with real roof-light rules. A lit number means available, OFF DUTY means keep your hand down, and a dark light means someone beat you to it. Survive the rain round, the rival hailer, rush hour, and the outer-borough rule flip on the green cabs, then read your trip sheet. Entertainment only, for adults 21+.

How to play

  1. Play one sober run first. That sets the baseline your later scores are compared against.
  2. Watch the roof lights. A lit medallion number means the cab is available: tap it to hail.
  3. Do not tap OFF DUTY or dark lights. A false hail costs points and earns you a honk.
  4. When the round goes outer borough, green cabs count too. When it rains, tap before the rival hailer with the red umbrella does.
  5. Miss three available cabs in a row and the game will politely offer you the subway.

Hail a Cab FAQ

How do you play Hail a Cab?

Cabs cross the screen with roof lights. Tap a cab when its medallion number is lit, that means it is available. If the light reads OFF DUTY or is dark, let it pass. Outer-borough rounds flip the rule for green cabs, and rain rounds add a rival hailer who races you to the curb.

What do the taxi roof lights mean?

A lit medallion number means the cab is available, so tap it. OFF DUTY in red means do not tap. A dark roof light means the cab is taken. It is the same code real New York cabs use, which is why half the city gets it wrong.

Is Hail a Cab free to play?

Yes. It runs right in your browser with no download and no account. Your scores are saved on your own device only.

Does Hail a Cab test sobriety or impairment?

No. It is for entertainment only and is not a sobriety or impairment test. The game compares your score to your own earlier baseline purely for fun. It is intended for adults 21 and older, and you should never drive after using cannabis.
